Bullseye
Bullseye Sight Glass is used in drilling a hole in a tank at the top of the optimal oil level. After that, the sight glass is threaded into the hole and resembles a bolt with a glass head. When the equipment is running, a line in the glass indicates where the oil level should be. One advantage of using a bullseye sight glass is that it can help you detect foaming in your system. This usually occurs when water and other contaminants are present, allowing you to detect problems before they cause serious damage.
Columnar
Clear, vertical tubes mounted outside tanks allow you to see a larger sample of oil than bullseye sight glasses. They are, however, more difficult to install and are typically mounted near the bottom of tanks, where they are likely to be damaged. Another issue is that because they tend to draw from the bottom of tanks, they rarely exhibit problems with foaming when it is present. The ability to mark the correct oil levels for a machine while it is running and idled is one advantage of columnar sight glasses over bullseye. Bullseye vision glasses can only show one of the two.
BS&W Bowls Sight Glass
Bottom sediment and water (BS&W) bowls are mounted at the bottom of tanks and frequently include a magnet that attracts metallic contaminants.
